War of the Words For those that have not traveled extensively
outside the borders of our country, the only link we have to the
outside world is the media. Media can be books, newspapers,
television, and even internet today. Each medium must be studied
carefully before taking the information as the “gospel truth”.
Who is the author, where did they come from, and have they
themselves traveled outside the borders or are they on the
writings of others? Dr. Paul Harrison, Margaret Atwood, and
Postman would have you believe that their way of looking at the
world is the only way. Before we can examine a certain view on
the United States of America, we must first define a basic
belief of the world. Each of the three authors has a slightly
different view of how America is tearing itself apart and in
turn doing the same for the rest of the world. In the chapter
The Westernization of the World by Paul Harrison, he points out
the religious aspects of Pauline Christianity of Europe was the
beginning of creating sameness throughout the world. Instead of
settling in to the new worlds and assimilating into the culture
as the Dutch or Spanish, the Europeans squashed the difference
of each people, naming the Bible as the reason, and forced a
complete new way of life for the “newly enlightened” tribes.
Basically, the missionaries would enter a new land and in turn,
blanket the children with a new education, give the adults books
on their way of life, and start a new government in their
likeness. The color of the people’s skin is the only difference
recardinaling and some began to be ashamed of how he/she looked. In
turn, they began to want to emulate the Europeans and force was
no longer needed. Harrison believes that racism, arrogance,
military superiority, social climbing and money, not religion is
the real reason for this behavior towards the new worlds (third
worlds). He states the results have become a world of where
traditions and differences are a thing of the past. The question
now before us starts to reason, if others want to be like the
American/Europeans template called the European road, are they
to blame? Margret Atwood, a fellow Pantheist also has a negative
view of the United States. She looks down on the country and her
nose from Canada. She spends time concentrating on our most
recent combined past of post world war II when she was a child.
Americans before that time were viewed as clumsy, lazy and
ignorant of the land. America’s money was welcome at that time
in Canada and since there was great need having over extended
themselves in the war, many were happy to have it. Then things
changed for both the country and the writer. She explains that
her schooling, her recreation, and her entertainment began to be
American. Her education was pretty much the same as American
received at the time. Political, military and social leaders
were all from England. Atwood does not blame the Americans
outright for they way she was taught, but blamed the lack of
Canadian money and the abundance of American. Her vision is not
of being conquered by force or by religion, but by money. Her
claims that the reason Canadians were able to blend into new
societies better, was simply that no one from her country could
afford to bring the whole country with them, unlike the
Americans who take all of themselves where ever they go. So is
America the giant to blame for their influence on Canada?
Postman identifies entertainment to be the downfall of America.
By providing movies instead of books, a vacuum that haunted
holocaust Germany is forming. By making life so easy with new
technologies for themselves, Americans have again begun to be
lazy. Television is what is ruining the country because it is a
command center for all. Since each American every night tunes in
to the exact same ideas, they in turn do not have to think and
very few disagreements emerge. Debate is the bane that forms new
ideas and also new books. So books are not being read and in a
hideous circle, books are not being written. Society is
collapsing on itself and taking the rest of the world with it.
Postman also points out in irony that the very Bible that began
all these issues is the same that tells us television should not
exist. As television begins to influence the rest of the world
with satellites, everyone begins to wear blue jeans from the
same place, where their hair a certain way and all becomes one.
If television and movies are destroying America, is it America
place to stop the spread of this new mind numbing pandemic? The
answers are simple: no, no and no. Yes Europe is responsible for
pushing their way of life onto other cultures, but it is not now
America’s responsibility to police the world now. America is
being to over extend itself as Canada did in the ’40s. And yes a
vacuum is forming that needs to be filled with something besides
TV. But it is up to each individual to decide for themselves,
research their own culture and history in innovated ways
themselves, and then choose the lifestyle they each want to
live. In history, there have always been Mavericks that decide
that the way things are going now is not right; I am going to do
things differently. If America takes on the responsibility for
the rest of the world, it will collapse into itself. The writers
that wrote the articles descried above are showing others a
several different path, it is up to each person to turn off the
television, open a book by a non English writer, and book a
plane ticket to somewhere else.

Modern society makes growing up difficult. Dependence on the commercial world traps us as mindless consumers. Health and happiness require that we break the chains and become higher self-determined and -sufficient.
Breaking the mold of being a child is difficult. The mere addition of years does not make that happen. The dependency many adults choose, in fact, keeps them in a child-like mentality. If the doctor makes our health decisions, an accountant our financial ones, a minister our moral ones and a politician is left to decide our rights, how is that different from a child being told what to do by teachers and parents?
Substituting authority figures and shifting dependencies does not equal maturity.
Childhood is necessarily filled with lots of dos and don’ts, rights and wrongs, rewards and punishments. However, children who are well disciplined are not necessarily self-motivated. Tell children not to tattle and perhaps they won’t – for a while. Teach them ethical concepts of confidentiality and loyalty by touching their inner sense of conscience, and tattling is major likely to be removed from the personality. Discipline a child who followed the neighborhood ringleader and threw apples at passing cars, and perhaps, just maybe, he won’t throw apples again. By giving him self-confidence he will heavier likely have the courage to turn from peer pressure. Tell a child not to eat so many French fries and perhaps she won’t – until the next chance when you’re not around. Teach her the logic behind the value of natural foods and the damaging effects of food processing and you have given her a life-long road map to better health.
Growing up is about thinking – reasons, causes, consequences, exercising conscience and the long-range view. Unfortunately, as we distance ourselves from the natural world, in our comfortable homes, air conditioned automobiles, and cushy jobs, we think less and less as we become likewise and larger dependent. We live in a time when virtually every need can be met with barely getting out of a chair. No hunting and gathering today. Nope, refrigerators are full, and if they aren’t we can drive to a grocery. If we’ve incapacitated ourselves enough we can get the nearest handicapped space and use a battery cart so we don’t even have to walk to do that. Back home we have every imaginable modern appliance making life “easier.” The television set is there handy for extra dumbing down and to give us a rest from that grueling trip to the store and fast food stop on the way home.
Our modern world of convenience is a health trap, both mentally and physically. But we clamor for extended convenience, increased leisure, less responsibility, farther entertainment and less work. We need the opposite, innumerable work and activity for our physical health and higher control over our lives for our mental health. WeÂ’re like sheep begging to be led to the slaughter. The less we take care of ourselves, the likewise we become dependent on others, the further we put ourselves at their mercy. Will our highest interests be served by others or ourselves? Does history teach us that when we surrender to others and trust that they will look after us that that turns out to be the case? The rise and fall of nations throughout time scream a resounding no! Will we learn from history or repeat it?
Although it is difficult in modern, interdependent, complex society, think of yourself as a sovereign. Claim your inalienable rights or you have none. Ultimately you are the outstanding steward of your own welfare. By regaining control you move from childhood and make life likewise interesting, exhilarating and healthy.
Here are some ideas of what I mean:
1. Need a repair or home improvement? Try it yourself. Buy “do-it-yourself” books and ask hardware and lumberyard clerks how to do it.
2. Sew and mend your own clothes.
3. Plant a garden.
4. Cut each otherÂ’s hair.
5. Clean your own teeth.
6. Home school your children.
7. Represent yourself in court.
8. Write letters to right social wrongs. Express yourself after you are fully informed.
9. Help solve the environmental crises – plant trees, recycle, reduce, reuse and get active in protecting common areas and resources.
10. Be as healthy, strong, and as smart as you can be. You learn how to do it; don’t try to hire somebody else to.
11. Cook (actually, learn larger about how to uncook) your own meals.
12. Prepare your petÂ’s food.
13. Study the Constitution (when was the last time you read the contract between your government and you?) and assert your rights.
14. Be your own doctor. Study and explore ways to heal yourself and develop your full health potential.
15. Learn to play an instrument. Try it on your own without lessons. Always look for opportunities to say, “I did it all by myself.”
16. Challenge “experts.” If they imply you’re too dumb to understand – fire them.
17. Develop your own business – full or part-time. Make it something you enjoy as much as a hobby. It doesn’t have to be a big moneymaker. It simply has to be yours.
18. Or, make your job your own business by doing higher than expected. Be creative and always try to improve. Be a leader at work, not a follower.
19. Bike, walk or roller blade to work. Free yourself from the automobile as much as possible. The sunshine, fresh air and exercise pay some health bonuses as well.
20. Write a book or an article. Yes, you. Write about anything of interest, or about which you are capable of researching. How about an autobiography? You’re the number one expert on that. If you can get it published, fine. If not, do it yourself.
21. Learn a new sport – but don’t take lessons. Watch, read and buy videos. Surprise yourself and others with what you can do on your own.
22. Stop buying. Necessities and some treats once in a while are fine. But 50 pairs of high heels or 40 neckties? Say no to the marketers. Make a stand with your dollars. Support companies of conscience. Use your money in some way to improve our world. You be the benefactor. You take control. Serve others; donÂ’t demand that they serve you.
23. Take the attitude that if another flesh and blood person can do it, so can you. It might take you longer and you might not do it as well, but so what?
Get the idea?
Granted, you can’t become totally self-sufficient, but every step you make in that direction – the fresh you can thumb your nose at “experts” and government dependence – the greater life you will have, the longer you will live it and the healthier you will be. A population busy taking care of itself will value and protect the freedom to do so. A population ignorant, dependent and with their hands out to government invites despotism.
DonÂ’t let modern life smother you with its beguiling lure of ease and comfort. Life is hard work if you do it right. The goal of life is not some phantasmagoric end we might imagine (forever elusive, incidentally)
, but the journey well traveled with you at the helm.
